Holy moly, ~vee, this did not even occur to me when hearing about the backlinks functionality in GUS on IRC and the ML a week or two ago! Now that I think about it, it's really the main useful thing to get out of such a functionality. Earlier I thought it was just a toy, a la this page in my (old) thesis:
an example of backlinks as a toy
This changes *everything*, lol. I might have to go back and add backlink links to all of my writings.
(I admit, I also added this post to test out the functionality, since your page doesn't have any backlinks yet).
.. of course, I have to publish this page then go edit it on gemlog.blue. But that's okay. For now :)
(footnote: how to refer to people from disparate parts of the cluster? -- ~*, *.org, 🚀* ... ?)
demifiend wrote a well-thought-out polemic on the state of modern social media, and I must say it's given me pause. I am active on the Fediverse, which is, I maintain, in better shape than Twitter...
but then, I never really used Twitter and maybe my experiences on Fedi have been shielded or privileged. Which is 100% possible and more than likely true.
Anyway, I was going to say something about the GUS backlink feature and how it relates to demifiend's ideas in their post, but now that I've walked around and come back to this I don't really know if it *is* a problem. The thing about gemini/the web that I had forgotten about is that it's *publishing* -- so if I have an idea I *don't* want to be made at least somewhat public, I won't publish it. That's kind of the point of the web.
And so, if I publish something and someone else wants to link to it, well, that's their business. I was going to say something about how that's kind of taking some agency away, but again, that's any publishing. If I were to write and distribute a paper zine, others would be free to refer to it or quote it or whatever.
So.... never mind? I guess? I *did* enjoy reading demifiend's article (post? missive?) so feel free to check that out, I guess.
