I think the current behavior is that when opening a tab in the background, the URL isn't marked as read/visited. If you do the same but open the feed items in foreground tabs, they should be marked read/visited right away.
IIRC this has been brought up before and I was planning to do something about it, namely mark a tab's URL visited when you switch to the tab, but apparently I didn't get around to it. I'll check my todo list and ensure this is in there.

Q: How does the viewed pages algorithm work? — Sometimes I visit a post by clicking a link on Cosmos, view the post, navigate up in the hierarchy, see the Gemlog's index, and the just read post title is still rendered in bold. Same goes for read posts from Lagrange's subscription pane. To reproduce, try opening a gemlog with unread posts. CMD/CTRL-Click to open an unread post in a new tab. Click on the new tab.
