So the prevailing point of view seems to be: 'the books are not canon, especially earlier ones that had to fit between episodes. The books from after the show's cancelation are also not canon, but they're new stories and we'll take anything we can get until new TV media contradicts them.' Also apparently the post-cancelation books are better than the pre because they have more breathing room.
