About WriteIt! version 2.0 Designed and written by C.K. Haun RavenWare Software 22045 McClellan Rd. Cupertino, CA 95014 Copyright 1990, C.K. Haun, all rights reserved. This product is ShareWare. If you like it and use it, please send something to encourage me to write more. Cash, blank disks, your own program, anything you feel is worth the value you've received from my work. And remember, good software breeds good software. WriteIt! is an NDA word processor designed to let you capture your thoughts while you're in any application. Version 2.0 adds features that make WriteIt! more powerful that ever before, and easier to use! Version 2.0 removes the command popup and replaces it with a standard window menu bar. A list of the menus and commands available follows; Apple Menu The apple menu contains the About item, which will keep you informed about the current version of WriteIt!, and gives you RavenWare's address, so you can send your shareware donations if you use WriteIt!. Of course, like any Apple menu, all your current NDA's are listed here, and they can be opened by selecting them. File Menu Open The Open item lets you edit existing files. WriteIt! will work with standard text files, programming source files, and Teach files (file type $50). Using Teach files lets you save font and style information with your document. Save and Save As These items let you save your work. If you are editing an exisiting file and select Save, WriteIt! will save to the current file. If you have started from scratch, or select the Save As option, WriteIt! will prompt you for a new file name to save the file as. You have another choice here, the 'Entire Document' or 'Text Only' selection. If you select the 'Entire Document' radio button, WriteIt! will create a Teach type file (file type $50) and save the text of your file AND all the font and style information. If you select 'Text Only' WriteIt! will create a standard ASCII text file (file type $04) and save just the text information, any special fonts or styles will NOT be saved. Close WriteIt! Selecting Close WriteIt! will close the WriteIt! NDA. Search Menu The Search menu lets you manipulate the text in your file. The first two options, Find and Find Again search for text patterns. When you select Find, you'll be asked for the text you want to find. WriteIt! will find the text and hilite it for you. If it cannot find the text, WriteIt! will beep. Find Again will search for the last text searched for again, without prompting you for new text. Replace will ask you for text to find and for text to replace the found text with. For example, if you enter FRED in the first edit line and BOB in the second edit line, WriteIt! will look for FRED. When it finds FRED, it will delete the word FRED and insert the word BOB. Replace again does the same thing without prompting you for new words. NOTE: If you do not enter any text in the second ( replace text ) edit line, WriteIt! will ask you if you are sure you want to do that. The Hi Bit menu selection is for those folks working with old text files or Merlin assembler files. Those files store characters with the hi bit of each character ON. This will cause a garbaged display in WriteIt!. The Hi Bit dialog box will ask you for default reading and writing modes for Hi Bits, as well as giving you the option to correct hi bit settings in the file currently open. WARNING: If you do NOT know what that all means, DO NOT use the hi bit menu command. You won't need it. Font Menu and Style Menu The font menu let's you select different type faces for the text in your document. The font menu will contain a list of all the fonts installed in your system when WriteIt! was started. There is also a Choose Font option. You may want to use the Choose Font option if you are running WriteIt! under the Finder and you install a new font after you have opened WriteIt!. The Style menu lets you set the style of the font you are using, plain, bold, underlined, outlined, or shadowed. Remember that some fonts ( like the system font, Shaston ) cannot be underlined even if you select that option. You can also pick the size of the font. Not all of the sizes listed are 'real' sizes, some are created by the Font Manager, and may not look as good as you'd like. The font sizes that are shown as shadowed text are 'Real' fonts, and will look as good as the person who designed them wanted them to look. Using Fonts and styles; To change to font or style of a word or group of words, hilite that word or words by clciking the mouse when the cursor is at the start of the word and dragging until you reach the end of the words you want to change the font or style of. This will hilite the text ( make it white on black, instead of black on white) . Then go to the Font or Style menu and make your selection, and the text will change. Rememeber, it may take a few seconds to change text styles, since the font manager may need to load a font from disk or do other processing. And keep in mind that font and style information is ONLY saved to Teach type files ( file type $50). If you save your document as Text Only, or if the original file was a text or source file, the font information will not be saved. If you opened a Text type file and want to make and save font information, you must use Save As and create a new file for this information. The final menu is not really a menu, it merely gives you the name of the last file WriteIt! worked with. Enjoy WriteIt! CKH
