When switching to XFCE a couple of weeks ago, I found it has a new and aggressive set of power management settings, including a screensaver. I haven't run a screensaver for years - there's not that much need to do so on an LCD screen and all my CRTs were consigned to the recycling centre many years ago.
But I'm happy to run them again because the CPU cost is likely to be minimal these days, yet the couple of ones available by default in XFCE are not very exciting. Cue XScreensaver. You might expect a piece of software that first saw the light of day in 1992 to be done - but no, it's still getting releases. And new screensaver modes!
It's a joy to see that people are contributing whimsical but otherwise lovely screensavers to the project.
