STAC ELECTRONICS TECHNICAL SUPPORT BULLETIN NUMBER: 017 SUBJECT: MAXIMIZE by Qualitas Corp. DATE: September 6, 1991 TIME: 4:30 PM SOURCE: Tech Support SUPERCEDES/ TECH002 SUPERCEDED BY: RELEASE STATUS: Public TITLE: Using MAXIMIZE memory optimizer with SSWAP OVERVIEW: Maximize doesn't "know" about situations in which drive letters are abruptly switched during boot. This situation occurs when the Stac program SSWAP is used during the execution of config.sys. ISSUES/COMMENTS: This procedure requires a bootable diskette. Refer to the FORMAT command in your DOS manual for instructions on creating one. 386MAX and BLUEMAX are equivalent programs for 386 based clones and 386 based PS/2 machines respectively. In this technote, the term 386MAX is used to refer to both programs. RECOMMENDED ACTIONS: This procedure is to be used with the Qualitas Corp. program MAXIMIZE to modify your config.sys and autoexec.bat files to load all possible programs and drivers into high memory. It is designed to be used from a bootable diskette. This procedure is NOT necessary if: 1. A Stacker volume is not installed on drive C:, or 2. The Stacker volume installed on C: is not being SSWAPed. For either of these situations, simply MAXIMIZE according to the Qualitas instructions. You will need to know which drive letter refers to your boot drive. This can be determined by running the Stacker utility SWAPMAP. One of the lines will look like... Drive x: was drive C: at boot time Whatever letter is "x:" will be the boot drive. In the procedure below, the boot drive is referred to as "x:". IF YOU ARE INSTALLING 386MAX FOR THE FIRST TIME... After booting normally, exit any shell program you may be using and unswap your boot drive by entering: SSWAP C: x: Then install MAX. DO NOT exercise the option to MAXIMIZE at this time. STEP 1. If you've just installed 386MAX... Assuming you used the default installation options and the 386MAX files are all in x:\386MAX, enter the commands below and reboot the computer. MKDIR C:\386MAX COPY x:\386MAX\*.* C:\386MAX STEP 2. Insert the bootable diskette into drive A: and enter the commands... COPY x:\CONFIG.SYS A:\ COPY x:\AUTOEXEC.BAT A:\ COPY x:\386MAX\MAXIMIZE.EXE A:\ COPY x:\386MAX\MAXIMIZE.TRM A:\ STEP 3. Edit the autoexec.bat file on A: and insert the line... PATH=C:\ as the first line. Save the modified autoexec.bat file. STEP 4. Boot the computer from this diskette and run MAXIMIZE. MAXIMIZE will ask you to press Enter to reboot. Do so. STEP 5. During this phase MAXIMIZE will give you the option of excluding programs in config.sys from consideration for being loaded high. Exclude any occurrances of SSWAP.COM from consideration. After a similar choice is made for autoexec.bat, the computer will reboot for the final phase. STEP 6. Enter the following commands... COPY A:\CONFIG.SYS x:\ COPY A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT x:\ then reboot the computer. STEP 7. If you wish to return to your former configuration enter... COPY A:\CONFIG.MAX x:\CONFIG.SYS COPY A:\AUTOEXEC.MAX x:\AUTOEXEC.BAT then reboot the computer.
