I made a video about the Gemini Protocol and uploaded it on Youtube and Peertube yesterday. It was a lot of fun to make. I've been streaming myself gaming on Youtube for a couple weeks now, but I also wanted to make videos about software I enjoy. I finally got around to it, and it was a lot of fun. The first thing I did was write a script. A lot of Linux youtubers make seemingly unscripted 10 minute videos where they just record their screen and go through whatever topic their covering. I wanted to go a different direction, so I decided to make short scripted videos with more editing rather than just a screen recording. I think my idea is pretty unique, but that might just be because I haven't come across anyone doing the same. Once I wrote the script I recorded myself on Audacity. I split my script up into sections that I could record at a time and just repeated a section until I had a satisfacory take before moving on to the next section. It suprised me a lot how many takes I did. Each section took me a couple takes, so I can't imagine how these other youtubers do ten minute uninterrupted takes. Once I recorded everything I cleaned up the audio and cut any sections where I took small breaks in between words. I really liked how it ended up it was nice, short and fast. Once I had the audio I downloaded kdenlive and used it for the first time. I've used video editors like Premier before, so I generally understood how to use it. I did have to look a couple things up, but it was pretty easy to use for the basic editing I did. Now I needed to figure out my visuals. I went back to my script and decided that I would come up with a different visual for each section that I had used for the audio recording, so for example for the intro and outro I decided to use my thumbnail. In the end I just take a couple of screenshots and then made some graphics with GIMP. Finally I just had to put everything together in kdenlive. This was pretty simply especially since I didn't even try to do any super fancy editing. I already have an idea for my next video as well. I'm planning to make a video about the Matrix protocol. I got the idea from the comments and I'm pretty excited to get started.
