     Tandy/Bernoulli-licensed drives
     From: TORVOLD	To: ALL

Does anyone have experience with the Bernoulli Technology removable
cartridge drives that were available for the Tandy? I have a small lot of
20 meg 5 1/4" cartridges, which appear to be identical to genuine
Bernoulli 20 meggers. They are packages under the "Mountain" brand.
Altho they slide right in and the drive recognizes them, they will not
format correctly. Can anyone shed any light on these? I have a return
privelege if I act quickly. THanks!

Hi,
SX and I want to know what is the light pen. Since I got a plug in the
motherboard I assume that I only need a driver. Where
find such driver and for what program?

RE: Radio Shack - JUNK (Re: Msg 23459)
     From: KEVINGIBSON	To: POGI

The practice of bridging traces with wires and soldering components is not
an uncommon manufacturing process. I have seen it on many boards. It is a
way for a manufacturer to control costs. As long as the circuit is electrically
equivalent to the design, there should be no problem. If I saw a large number
of extra wires and components on a board, I might be concerned about quality,
but I do not think that 2 qualifies as a large quantity. I have heard of
some manufacturers that solder pull-up resistors onto their board to correct
errors made in the original design -- this practice does effect quality.
As far as Tandy goes, don't bet that they do not ever repair any of their manufa
ctured products. Anyone remember the "Flying Circuit" which was present on
some of the older Tandy Color Computers -- this circuit was apparently added
after the design of the board was complete to enable artifact colors.
My experience with Tandy products has been mostly good, but I do wish they
would put decent warranties on their products.	90 days is one of the shortest
product warranties that I have seen.

RE: Radio Shack - JUNK (Re: Msg 23437)
     From: TAHITI	To: 1008OM

I own four Tandy computers. The one I am typing on now is a 1000SX I purchased
in 1987. Never had a problem.	My two 3000NL and 1400HD are working just fine
even though I have spent a lot of fun hours upgrading them and adding new
boards and bios chips a
nd memory chips and 386SX upgrades and operating systems, etc.	On one
occasion, while daydreaming, I accidently pulled out an internal modem and
replaced it while the machine was on. I was prepared for a mushroom cloud but
the 3000NL continued to functio
n normally. I was lucky, but the machines are remarkably resiliant.

I do agree that the prices for peripherals are way too high. Most of the Tandy
computers, at least in my experience, are no barga n either. When the price is
good you usually are getting a machine with a smaller than usual hard drive or
monitor in the .5
1 dot pitch area or an SX type chip.

The return rate you mention may be due to the consumer Radio Shack attracts.
Most are those who want a machine to use at home but who have little if any
technical knowledge. This type, and I know this person, paid a consultant
$75.00 to have his machine
plugged into the wall.	That is right, it would not work and he called a
consultant without checking the plug. I know many people who put floppys in
upside down and try to format them and I know of those who will try to plug the
monitor, especially the RG
B's, into a serial port. Not the fault of Tandy Corporation.

If I had one major complaint about Radio Shack, it's the lack of knowledge and,
in some instances, the downright incompetence of some of their employe s. They
know less than some of the individuals I mentioned here, and I really hate it
when they become a
rgumentative and surly. So I try relly hard not to shop at Radio Shack. But
the reliability of their machines I find hard to beat.

From reading the messages here, I thought this is a support group for folks who
made the mistake of buying a Tandy computer. We got to help each other. Lord
knows there is no help from the "manufacturer". I know I'm sorry that I bought
the damn thing instead of a 100% compatable, and mine still works.

Need more info on what didn't work for wd-1003/st-251 combo. Does controller
work with other drives? Does drive work with other controllers? If yes to
both then sounds like incompatibility. Did you check all jumpers on both card
and drive?

As far as I know the "smartdrive" is same as IDE. So most any IDE drive should
work. You may not be able to use full capacity though, depends on what sizes/
drive types your computer bios supports(See your setup pgm).

Good luck. I have 1000SX also and when I first got it looked into a "promised"
light pen that was compatible. From what I remember it never came to market.
You might try calling Tandy headquarters in Texas. I can't remember the number
right now but someone recently listed it(late dec or jan). I don't think any
third party comp. came out with programs/hardware either.

ok, on the wd 1003/st-251 combo. Don't know if the controller works with
other drives, but the drive worked in other computers (was formatted in
another). Don't know about jumper settings. I think I am going to maybe
try that newer drives are compatible with older computer
models without a lot of trial and error, I would suggest that you get one of
the books about upgrading older Tandys. The one I have is "Upgrading Your
Tandy" from DCS Industries. I bought it when I wanted to buy a new, larger
had drive for my 1000TL. Since then, I have seen another one from Micro
Systems, and they also have a video. These books describe all the things you
need to consider, and may save you some money and headaches in the long run.
One thing I have learned: only change one thing at a time!

   Good luck!

About a year ago I too was intrigued with that same idea. Mike Salisbury

was disappointed with the results. His friend felt that the money would
have been better spent toward a whole, new upgraded PC.

Thanks for the upgrading advice. Right now, my biggest problem with my 3000HD
is hard drive storage space. I have a question maybe you or someone else can
answer: Do all SCSI drives have an on-board BIOS so that the host computer
does not have to be able to support that specific drive type? One thing that
I also want to add is a cheap CD-ROM drive. Do you know where I might find a
_cheap_ one that will work with my 3000HD?

I have a Tandy 3000HD, and in order to mount a drive in the middle bay, you
have to have some sort of spacers since the bay is slightly wider than the
drive is, and the holes are much bigger than needed. Does anyone know where
I might be able to find a set of them, or maybe you have a set of them? I am
in need of a set in order to mount a hard drive in that middle bay. Thanks
in advance.

What you need are called "drive rails." They screw onto the drive and
then you insert screws through the "drive cage" into the "drive rails."
I have not seen the rails available in some time -- check with your
local Radio Shack - or make you own (wood slats, with holes bored inline
with the holes in the drive housing - you will need to get the correct
screw threaded "screws" so that they reach from the drive cage, through
the housing and wood slats to the drive).

Hi,

I have a 3800HD, so not quite the same, but some things with Tandy
documentation tend to be uniform across models.

Check the owner's manual for a chapter called something like "Changing
Parameters." Usually, there is a setup program called SETUPxxx.EXE located
in your DOS directory, that you will enter to make such changes, then reboot.
Maybe, but probably not, you can do it with the Fn+Fx key combination. Take
a look.

   Hope this helps.

$38.00? Who did you talk to? That seemed awfully high, even for Radio
Shack, so I got out my current catalog, and I found the listing for the
DMP400, "Fabric Cart." item #26-1418, available through "Consumer Mail
Center," which means it is a special-order item, for $9.99. Try another
Radio Shack store, company-owned (avoid the franchises), to have it ordered,
or try 1-800-THE-SHACK.

There is another possibility I can think of. Sam's Club carries a very
good brand of replacement ribbons, called Pelikan. Most sizes come in boxes
of six, for around $25.00. Take your old ribbon or cartridge with you to
compare with the pictures on the boxes. If you don't have that, each box
lists a variety of makes and models that use the ribbon. I buy ribbons for
my DMP240 there.
