Optional LiveXP migration for selected students...

After one of my long-term students had an issue with her Preply profile which they claim could not be fixed, and given the unethical practice of this company (see link below for details); she carried out research which I ought to have carried out myself, but I am a busy man.

She came accross a little known platform, LiveXP. And in the interests of transparency and honesty, I will present students with the facts when offering migration.

See here for details of a private arrangement. This is possible if direct payment is posible - and supported currencies.

The preditory nature of Prepy, and why I am offering a migration plan

My own profile

LiveXP app for android - 111 MB

LiveXP for Apple

Mp3 Audio reference - test material for students

I am currently carrying out a trial of this platform. For teachers, it has this key advantage.. "Earnings for trial lessons

You get a guaranteed $3.49 for conducting a trial lesson. When a student buys a subscription within 30 days after a trial lesson with you, you get 2 XP and an extra $10."

Compare and contrast with Preply, who take 100% commission on EVERY SINGLE ONE - in other words, you may have six trial lessons, gain 1-2 students, use up 6 hours of your time and energy which could be better spent - earning some pay; or making material. Instead you spend 5 hours of your time, providing Preply with unearned, undeserved income while you yourself, the teacher, get precisely NOTHING.

Preply's subscription plans are a scam...

They tout themselves as a subscription service. In the past, lessons packages allowed the students to use the lessons at a flexible pace set by the student - and although I want students to have regular (ideally 2-3 per week) lessons, the subscriptions are a SCAM. This is because they constantly urge the teachers to encourage the students to pay for more hours...

"More hours, faster progress

Hi David, XXXXX has used up all their hours this month. If you believe more lessons could help them get closer to their learning goals, encourage them to top up their balance before their upcoming billing cycle payment.

Message student

Don’t know what to say?

Use this template to send a message to your student:

Hi XXXXX -! Just a heads-up, you've used up all your hours for this month. If you'd like to make faster progress toward your goals, you can top up your balance before your next billing cycle payment, without upgrading your subscription. If you're interested, here's how: https://help.preply.com/en/articles/xxxxxxxx-how-to-add-extra-hours-to-your-subscription. Please let me know if you have any questions!"

What they DO NOT TELL the srudent is that, if they subscribe but fail to use during the billing cycle: ALL UNUSED LESSONS and the PAYMENT FOR THEM will be FORFITTED. Preply take ALL of this, as well as ALL the student's pay for every first lesson! The student cannot claim a refund; the teacher receives NOT A CENT EITHER. And they do not warn you in advice (or indeed at any stage!) either. By my definition it is a SCAM.

So there are plenty of drawbacks for the student and teacher alike on Preply's platform. How about LiveXP?

Downsides of LiveXP:

The main one so far is their rate is higher for the student. I have barely begun an evaluation so far, more will appear later. But already, at this early stage, the lower rate with preply is a false economy for students. However, it has to be recognised that students in for example Asia, where living costs as well as wages are lower, the students may well not be able to afford the higher hourly rate of LiveXP. LiveXP is relatively unknown, and new to me. More will appear hare when I have had more evaluation time.

Given that the rate for the stutent is higher - and given also that a few technical issues need to be ironed out, I am making migration for long term students OPTIONAL not MANDATORY after directing students to the facts.

Which students will be offered migration?

Students who are long standing, reliable and regular will be prioritised. I will only offer migration to students on the bais of affordability - LiveXP have a higher hourly rate; and as a hard nosed realist a student in Vietnam, for example, cannot be expected to pay as much as one in Sweden. If there is mutual agreement between myself and the student concerned, I will advise them to migrate pending the end of their current Preply billing cycle. Please note that currently, if you are using the interactive excercises Preply provide, this is NOT AVAILABLE off their platform, so you cannot migrate until I find an alternative. Research is ongoing.

If you are a student wishing to migrate... please contact me - my details are in my business card at the top of the screen. Please DO NOT discuss or mention this on Preply; use the means shown above, or email norrisdavid1297@gmail.com - and I will reply as soon as possible.

Please be aware that I need to check scheduling options first - just like the China visits, managing schedules is quite a logistics challenge!

You may view my current schedule in real time here. I will be adding google calendar synchronisation later.

The following os from LiveXP's website. I am adding it to put the facts in one place....

LiveXP Earning System

Lesson price is determined by subscription plans, not by tutors. How much tutors get per lesson (their rate) is based on their tutor level.

/livexp/rate.png

Earnings for regular lessons

For one 60-minute lesson, you can earn from $10 to $15 depending on your level. In the subscription model, each tutor has a level, which depends on their XP. It has been calculated based on your previous performance on LiveXP.

The more lessons you have, the more XP you get, the higher your level, the more you make per lesson.

Every successful lesson gives you 1 XP. When you level up, your rate per lesson rises.

XP formula is:

Total XP = 1XP × № of regular lessons over the last 365 days + 2XP × № of students who subscribed after trial lessons over the last 365 days. And remember that, just as before, you can get a tip after a lesson if the student really enjoyed it!

LiveXP Subscriptions

Subscriptions are designed to add more flexibility for tutors and students. For students, a subscription is essentially an auto-renewable lesson package that isn't "assigned" to a specific tutor. Lesson prices for students are determined by subscription plans, not by tutors.

This way, subscriptions level the field for tutors, because, in this case, you compete with your skills and personality, not with your prices.

Elements of subscriptions:

1. 30-minute trial lessons

We believe that 30-minute trial lessons may become a great encouragement for students to subscribe to full-length lessons and see if the tutor matches their expectations and needs.

- The price for students is fixed - $3.49.

- Each student can have only 1 trial lesson with each tutor.

- Tutors get guaranteed the full amount of $3.49 per 30-minute lesson + an extra $10 and 2XP if the new student buys a subscription after the trial lesson.

2. Level-based earnings

For tutors, how much they get per lesson is based on their level (XP).

The tutor level (XP) depends on:

- How many completed lessons they've had in the last 365 days

- The number of new students who have bought a subscription after trial lessons in the last 365 days.

The more lessons you have, the higher your level, the more you earn.

Lesson confirmation

Jun 17, 2022

1 min read

After a lesson, both the student and the tutor need to confirm it so the tutor can get paid. Once a lesson is over, the student and the tutor will see a modal window to confirm the lesson took place and, if necessary, report any issues.

It works like this:

If both the student and the tutor confirm the lesson, the tutor gets paid right away.

If the student doesn't confirm the lesson within 24 hours, we'll consider it confirmed.

If the tutor doesn't confirm the lesson within 24 hours, and the student indicated that the lesson didn't happen, the lesson will be automatically returned to the student.

If you have any issues with the lesson, make sure to report them in the pop-up window after the lesson. We will put the payment on hold, investigate the issue, and contact you shortly.

We urge you to be more vigilant when confirming the lesson so as not to do it by accident. Once the lesson is confirmed and the tutor gets paid, there is nothing we can do. In this case, contact the Support Team as soon as possible so we can try to make things right for you.

Note that here pay is NOT INSTANT. Ladies beware!!!!

How can I reschedule a lesson?

Apr 9, 2021

2 min read

If you know you can't make it to a lesson, let the other participant know as early as possible and send a reschedule request suggesting another date and time.

Students and tutors can send reschedule requests directly to each other whenever they need. All the recipient of the request has to do is accept or decline it.

As simple as that!

The tool works exactly the same for both students and tutors and doesn't influence the Lesson Success Rate.

The reschedule request is at your disposal up till the very end of the lesson time.

✳️ If the time of the lesson you want to reschedule is over, the reschedule feature will not be available for you. In this case, mark the lesson as "Not Completed". It will return to the student's balance for further rescheduling.

To reschedule a lesson:

1. Go to “My lessons” and choose a lesson you want to reschedule.

2. Click three dots next to the “Join lesson” button and then “Reschedule lesson”.

💡

You can reschedule one lesson up to 3 times.

3. Pick a new time slot, then “Confirm reschedule”.

4. Wait for the recipient to accept or decline your request.

Sometimes, the rescheduling request can get declined. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do, and the lesson time remains unchanged, and you will have to join it. In such a case, please treat it with respect and understanding 🙌.

💡

If you change your mind, you can cancel your request via "Cancel request" before it's accepted or declined.

If you got a rescheduling request:

Lessons with reschedule requests are specially marked

You are free to accept or decline reschedule requests sent to you.

To find a reschedule request history, go to the LiveXP messenger.

In the spirit of friendliness and mutual respect, let the recipient of the rescheduling request know the reason for the reschedule, and don't overuse their loyalty 😉.

Remember, everyone likes it when their time is valued.

💡

Tip for students 💫

If there are no suitable slots for rescheduling, ask the tutor to open a new slot.

If there is a need to reschedule a lesson for the 4th time:

1. Agree on a new date and time.

2. Contact Support and tell us the new date, time, and time zone. We'll help you to move the lesson.

What are Weekly lessons, and how to use them

What are Weekly lessons, and how to use them

💡

Weekly lessons aim to give students an uninterrupted, consistent learning routine. One that will help them achieve results.

Tutors, in turn, benefit from having a more stable schedule and predictable income.

How does it work?

To start weekly lessons with a tutor, students book several time slots throughout the week available on the tutor's schedule. The chosen time slots are reserved exclusively for the student (become unavailable for the other students) until they decide to stop learning with their tutor.

The tutor gets notified about it via the LiveXP app and email. If students change or stop their weekly lessons, the tutors also get notified about it.

For tutors to see a list of their students with weekly lessons, they need to go to

"My lessons" → "Weekly lessons."

☝🏼

Each lesson will be automatically booked 7 days in advance from the day of the first weekly lesson. Lessons will keep getting booked until the student stops their weekly lessons or until they runs out of lessons on their subscription balance.

If the student runs out of lessons, the system will notify the student and offer to refill the balance.

How to enable Weekly lessons?

Find a tutor you'd like to learn with regularly

On their tutor card or in their profile, use the "Book lesson" button and switch to the "Weekly lessons" tab

Choose days and time slots when you want to have lessons every week

"Confirm schedule"

That's it; your Weekly lessons schedule is set! The chosen days and time slots are reserved exclusively for you.

See your Weekly lessons schedule on the "My lessons" page.

📣

Remember:

✔️ To have weekly lessons, students need to have an active subscription

✔️ Each student can have regular lessons with as many tutors as they like

✔️ If students cancel their subscription or run out of lessons, weekly lessons will stop

How to stop regular lessons?

The regular lessons can be stopped only by students.

Go to "My lessons"

Choose the weekly lessons you want to stop

On the Weekly lessons page, click "Stop weekly lessons"

In the modal window, pick "Stop lessons"

NOTE: Already booked weekly lessons will still take place.

How to change a Weekly lessons schedule?

The schedule can be changed only by students.

To change a Weekly lessons schedule, stop your current weekly lessons with this tutor and set new ones.
