Our house has a fence running around most of the property with a small open section left behind. One corner of the fence has several vines and shrubs that grow thick and tall. These were fairly well-shaped when we moved in, but thanks to intense sunlight and bountiful rain this summer, the shrubs are growing rapidly.
I know nothing about gardening and plant care, but I'm trying to learn as best I can. I can't identify the plants in the corner of the fence, but I can see plainly that they're overgrown and about to consume the small space next to our shed.
On Sunday, while tending to the rest of the yard, I took a pair of hedge clippers and cut back the outermost layer of shrubbery. I was a little nervous that either I would expose part of the plants that I shouldn't, or I would disturb a bird or squirrel habitat. Neither appears to have happened, and thanks to some more well-timed rain, the bushes still seem to be thriving.
Many of my interests involve abstract concepts like studying mathematics, virtual environments like Linux, or faraway events like world news and foreign cultures. But there's a lot for me to learn quite literally in my own backyard. I should maybe spend more time getting to know the immediate world around me.
