Discovering this network has been a breath of fresh air for me, and it's made me realize just how much the web has sucked the life out of me.
There are the usual reasons: the Big Tech hegemony, the attention economy, social media, privacy, etc.
But there's also all the small ways that the cognitive load of maintaining websites has been slowly poisoning my spirit.
I'm tired of XSS and CSRF and CSPs and clickjacking.
I'm tired of third-party cookies and tracking pixels and CDN tracking and FLoC and the Topics API and adblock and anti-adblock and anti-anti-adblock.
I'm tired of cache headers and etags and content negotiation and range requests.
I'm tired of fonts and FOUT and FOIT and preloading¹.
I'm tired of bundlers and compilers and preprocesss and tree shakers and polyfills and Webpack and Babel and Create React App².
I fantasize sometimes about throwing all my computers in a lake and disappearing into the woods to live off the grid and build furniture for a living. The web has done that to me.
Hosting this capsule has been fun in a way I forgot the internet could be.
[1]: The time I spent hours debugging why icons on my site weren't preloading only to discover it was an issue with Chromium I nearly cried.
Issue 1065069: Preloaded SVG sprites are fetched 2x
[2]: Apparently CRA is deprecated now?? I started a new project with it because everyone said it was supposed to be the "easy" way and now I have to figure out how to migrate to whatever the heck I'm supposed to use instead.
