Take It Racing

https://r-doman.itch.io/take-it-racing

What is this game?

Take your car racing to earn money and move to the next class. Customize your car to achieve victory. With 24 races, will you make it to the Final?

Take It Racing is a car racing management simulator made for the Game Boy, developed in about a week for the GB Jam 8. I chose to play this to test Mitch's ability to play browser games offline on my phone.

Did I enjoy playing it?

It's an interesting idea but sadly is just not developed enough. It's advertised as a "strategy" game but the only variables available to you are "how good is your car at X" and "how much money can you spend on making it good at X", so the gameplay is reduced to basically a clicker game. Faster car = higher-paying races = get faster car. Supposedly a sequel is being worked on which looks more complex, but I haven't played it.

Take It Racing 2

The "clicker game"-ness of this is covered up by RNG, and the RNG is covered up by a neat commentary of the race. You send your car to a race, then sit back and watch the progress of the race lap by lap, with your car changing position and (sometimes) crashing out. Randomness is added so the fastest car is not guaranteed to win, and a slow car is not guaranteed to lose, so watching the progress lap by lap is somewhat exciting. Take It Racing was clearly made for a game jam and therefore is kept super simple, you don't even see the actual cars move on the track, only text commentary. Still, clicker game + RNG = dopamine, and I like the Game Boy's simplicity, so it's a *5/10*.
