Rory Mooney, 5 Feb
A man who did not appear on Friday and an arrest warrant was issued has
been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today.
Jason Villa (36) of Elaghmore Park in Derry did not appear to answer
charges of two assaults on police and one of resisting police on June 3
last but appeared today.
The court heard on Friday that police were called to a report of a
domestic incident and identified themselves as police when they
arrived.
The occupant of the address refused to open the door and the defendant
could be seen through a window.
At one stage a brush shaft was poked through the door and two officers
were struck.
Eventually police forced their way in and arrested the defendant.
He said he chose not to open the door and said he did not intend to
strike any police officers.
Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said his client had no history for this
type of behaviour and had 'issues'.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that the defendant was clearly seen
assaulting police and refusing to open the door.
He said the defendant was 'aggressive throughout' and then when given a
chance to have a pre-sentence report he refused.
He sentenced Villa to four months in prison.
