Psion Revo

The Psion Organiser was the breakthrough PDA first released in 1984 - looking more like a scientific calculator, it was a revolutionary pocket device offering multi-functionality and interchangeable "Datapaks."

It went through several iterations - of which I've had a few: the Series 3, the 3a, 3c, 3mx, Sienna, Series 5, 5mx, Revo and Series 7

It developed a reputation as an over engineered, executive accessory with an advanced and highly efficient, multitasking operating system - EPOC.

Recently I acquired my first Revo, Psion's answer to a budget version of the Series 5mx. The condition's a bit shabby but it was bought cheaply and has the unusual bonus of having it's rechargeable batteries recently replaced.

I must say it scores where my other Psions have failed.

On the downside there's no removable storage and no backlight - but really, the screen doesn't need one apart from when operating in very low or zero light.

With my recent adoption of Gemini, I immediately pressed the Revo into writing duties - either making quick notes and ideas or writing draft versions.

The tricky part is extracting the files as the Revo cradle/dock has a serial RS232 cable not USB but I happened to have a serial to USB adaptor.

However, for some reason I couldn't get this combination to speak to PsiWin (Psion's connectivity suite) on my Thinkpad X40 running XP, nor would it work with XP in Virtual Box on my iMac. Strange.

Out of desperation, I installed Micro XP in Virtual PC on my Powerbook and although I used exactly the same process as before, this time it worked!

So moving files across is simplicity - drag and drop from Revo to XP to OSX Leopard.

PsiWin on XP/VirtualPC/Powerbook

Quite convenient actually as my entire Gemini workflow is based on my Powerbook - writing on both Revo and TextEdit, checking how gmi files look in Offpunk, uploading to my capsule with Cyberduck and doing admin on my server via SSH in Terminal. Not bad for a 18 year old PowerPC running at 800Mhz!
