Internet Archive Finds Vol. 2

2023-10-08

I did one of these posts a while back and intended it to be a series where I periodically share the good stuff I find in the depths of the Internet Archive. It took me longer than I had planned but here is a second installment of gems I think more people should be aware of on the Archive.

The Pulp Magazine Archive

Pulp magazines (often referred to as "the pulps"), also collectively known as pulp fiction, refers to inexpensive fiction magazines published from 1896 through the 1950s. The typical pulp magazine was seven inches wide by ten inches high, half an inch thick, and 128 pages long. Pulps were printed on cheap paper with ragged, untrimmed edges.

If Sci-Fi, fantasy or mysteries are your cup of tea then this is a treasure trove of old short stories and novellas from many authors you've likely heard of and many more that you haven't. When you are in between books and don't know what to read why not read some old pulps? They are available as PDFs, epubs, txt and other formats and feature some pretty fantastic artwork too.

Palm OS Software

You may have listened to me harp on and on about how much I love Palm Pilots and Palm OS or maybe you remember PDAs from back in the day. Well, there is a huge collection of Palm OS software that can even be run directly in your browser thanks to a the CloudPilot emulator that is built into archive.org's site. Hint: Go play Rally 1000 or Tenpin Solitaire and thank me later.

Surf Music

Another good surf album I discovered on the archive by Italian band The Uninvited. The album title is Surfin' and Trashin' though on archive.org it is misspelled as Surfin' and Thrashin'. Either way it sounds good.

If that's not enough surf music for you then here are some archived episodes of a show called the GaragePunk Surfcast. A radio style podcast exploring surf musiic both new and old. This link does not include all the episodes but it's a good place to start. You can enter GaragePunk Surfcast in IA's search box and find even more episodes.

Volume 3 of Internet Archive Finds coming...whenever I get around to it.
