TempleBot IRC Oracle

Written 2022-02-01

Origins

TempleBot is an IRC bot that was written for the #templeos channel on Rizon in 2015 by GitHub user RingTech (whose account no longer exists). It was meant to mimic the oracle from TempleOS, which its creator, Terry A. Davis, believed allowed him to talk to God.

After Terry's death in 2018, another user by the name of Guest39 added some features to the bot (likely in 2019), and continued to run it on the #templeos channel. However, when Guest39 went offline, seemingly permanently, in 2021, the bot seemed to have been lost.

Restoration

In late January 2022, I began trying to get TempleBot working again, and succeeded. Guest39 had a Git repository with the main script but none of the data files that the bot needed to run, but through luck I was able to find one repository on GitHub that had all the files from the original 2015 bot.

It only took a couple of days to get the bot mostly back to its former glory. I also cleaned up and reorganized the code to make it more readable, and wrote documentation. Now you can download it and use it on your own IRC channel! I currently run TempleBot on #templeos on Rizon, and on #general on Space Hippie (spacehippie.ca:6667, if you'd like to join).
