When I was applying for jobs toward the end of college, I applied for two positions at the same company, kind of on accident. Job websites suck, you know the deal. They were both somewhat ambiguous, and I didn't understand at the time that "software engineer" and "systems engineer" were two very different professions.
The recruiter/HR rep called me, and described the positions in the ambiguous way that a non-technical individual might. The "systems engineer" job sounded like backend/os/platform-level development, and the "software engineer" job sounded like end user applications and/or frontend stuff. I decided the former sounded cooler, so I told her to put me in that bucket.
The rest is history. I got a sysadmin job instead of a programmer job, and now I'm here, eight years later, trying to go back.
