Be Careful What You Wish For

Overnight, five inches of snow. Fortunately, it's powdery, not the thick, heavy, wet stuff. I let the dogs out this morning, and they plowed through it to find a place to do their business. I let them in and began to shovel.

One pass with the big push-scoop, another with the regular shovel to clean it up. I worked quickly and didn't care about being perfect. Most of the snow has apparently passed, but it's still snowing lightly out right now. I'll be out there again, for sure.

I didn't take a back pill earlier; I seem to be doing okay. I didn't feel anything bad when I was out shovelling, but now that I'm sitting down, I'm stiff. The kettle's on, the aeropress ready: I need a cup of coffee. Duolingo beckons. I've got twenty or thirty minutes before I start work.

We've avoided significant snow for half the winter, which feels like its own kind of victory. But that was also true a couple of years ago when we got the snowy winter from hell, where it felt like it started snowing in January, and never stopped; we'll see, I guess. In the meantime, winter's about half over. That feels like a victory, too.
