perhaps ssb - secure scuttlebutt would be easy - no need to make so many choices.
you don't need to choose a username and you don't need to choose a server. your key pair describes your identity.
but you still need to choose a client software. you still need to connect to some pub/room servers, if you want to get updates over the network and communicate with people you don't see in person.
but ssb is so weird for people it is also hard to perceive. it is so much different that even jabber/activity pub feels much more natural.

however i think, the internet i like is a hobbyist network. no ads, collection of many small servers. however i think, it's not possible to 'earn' money on the internet without ads, or without exploiting the current state, that most of the users aren't literate enough to communicate on the network (message, have a web presence, site, page, blog, rss feed) without using big corporate technologies. they don't know about the alternatives even and it is hard to explain the decentralized way of...
