bubble's good point it has atom feeds, so that's one aspect of decentralization. but it is still not like lemmy, where one by having only its own mastodon instance account would be able to follow and contribute to remote lemmy discussion.

federation is one of the most important aspects of the current internet. and using non federated bbs feels a bit limiting to me.

so still i am considering running own bubble instance. and since i like gemini a lot, setting up a tootik instance is even more attractive to me. it might be i'll end up doing both. but writing on gemini space and be read on the web space is amazing. being part of federation whether you use gemini or web is amazing.

I didn't even know tootik ! it sounds like what I want to experiment with !

yeah, right? it sounds crazy.

i think the only 2 issues opened so far for tootik are mine.

on diaspora - it is not very alive currently. most of the people use activity pub projects. on our pod almost everyone went to our activity pub instances.

on socialhome - i chose it only to keep my diaspora connections and to avoid hubzilla's php.

alas only diaspora, hubzilla and socialhome speak diaspora protocol.

and i guess activity pub is an interesting example of democracy: all the projects (except diaspora) gathered to participate in the protocol creation. all negotiated, all opinions were taken in to consideration.

they ended up with something diaspora devs hate and consider their protocol to be much cleaner and much better, though maybe less universal and more vaugue.

but diaspora has not much people now. and hardly will attract newcomers.

so i don't advice running it. i just run it because i feel responsible for the whole history. and there are still a couple of users. even if there will be zero users i'll continue to maintain it and keep the obligation.

🐙 norayr · Jul 26 at 13:46:

tootik or gotosocial seems much easier to maintain because of the go language. and i have heard from people running gotosocial it is much less resource hungry than even pleroma which was promoted as lightweight.

i guess tootik should also be lightweight. of course load also depends on how many connections does the instance have. and which db it uses. i imagine sqlite of tootik can be overwhelmed by the amount of contacts my socialhome has, and even postgres on ssd struggles with this.

sorry i understand i write too much.

i just had this thought that indeed, bubble could integrate activity pub support for user feeds and subspaces.

that would be amazing.

Thanks for the advice. and I appreciate your commitment

That's not a problem for me

@norayr

bubble could integrate activity pub support for user feeds and subspaces.
that would be amazing.

The way I see it, there's too much of an impedance mismatch between Gemini and ActivityPub. The latter is very much web-centric, so for Bubble to really support ActivityPub, it would have to basically be a full-blown web service as well. That is way too much complexity.

Also, from a user experience point of view, having a barrier between web content (=what's available via ActivityPub) and Geminispace is a good thing.

IMO, Bubble instances should federate in some simple way that might be useful for other Gemini capsules, too:

Fedi update and thoughts: sloth.run now runs on Firefish 1.0.4 . Everything's fine and dandy. I'll probably put a stop to free registration soon, though. I can't handle too much moderation/admin and I don't want people to get the feeling that I'm not there for them. Somehow I am now an admin or moderator in 3 different fedi communities. I'm curious about the lesser known fedi software like Hubzilla, Takahe, Ocelot. By my counting I have 8 different Fediverse accounts. The fediverse is...
