The association of "whilst" with pseudointellectualism might just be a North American thing.
Does the same feeling about "while/whilst" carry over to "amid/amidst" and "among/amongst"?
Ultimately "whilst" derives from "while", via a process that turned nouns into adverbs via an "-s" suffix. The "-t" part of it is just random. "while" itself derives from the same Indo-European root that gives us the word "quiet", if I recall correctly.
