General discussion on ASCII art. Unicode art, ANSI, figlet, image2ascii, historical interests, questions, etc. All are welcome!
What tools do you use? — I've been looking for a simple ASCII art editor for linux, open source, preferrably written in C (and definitely not Python or anything that pulls in random libraries and will stop working one day for no explainable reason) . Minimum requirements are: position the cursor anywhere, enter weird characters easily. Draw boxes and lines in various directions. Also, cut and paste as lines or boxes. I haven't found such a thing. There is a proliferation of online crap, but I...

Magic Gopher — This one was fun to make! I spent a lot of time playing with different variations of the glitter trail behind the wand, and landed on something very minimal. I generated the reference image using DALL-E with the following prompt: Illustration of a charming gopher dressed in a pink tutu, gracefully twirling on her toes. She holds a sparkling magic wand in her paw and waves it in the air. Admittedly it came out looking more like a chipmunk than a gopher, but that's alright since...

whirlwind | sword in the stone | mushoom — Some semi-recent stuff that I've done. This one is kind of an abstract whirlwind/tornado. I think it would be cool to put some words swirling around inside, but I haven't come up with anything yet. [preformatted] This is a scene from the disney movie "The Sword in the Stone", which is one of my favorite disney movies. There are some parts that I'm not totally happy with, but eh. [preformatted] This is a mushroom that I made for...

tcf-x [ANSI] — Testing posting ANSI art to Bubble. This piece is from a 2015 art pack, [https link] I converted it from an .ans file to utf-8 using a custom version of this algorithm, [https link] The top is utf-8 only, the bottom is utf-8 with ansi colors, bold and other sequences. It seems to be breaking Lagrange for me, everything below the preformatted block is not parsed correctly. [preformatted] [preformatted]

Is Unicode art a thing? Is it hard to know that a viewer will have all Unicode fonts installed?

Tiny Horses — I did a deep dive into the world of ASCII art horses. I found myself gravitating towards small-scale pictures. Here are some of my favorites. First up is one of my all-time favorite ASCII pieces. The horse on the top was drawn separately by sk, and then cjr took it and added the water/reflection underneath it. I love the details like the water splashing and the slight visual degradation of the mirror image in the water. [preformatted] I don't know who drew these ones, but I...

[NSFW] I want to get off — I just put together a mirror for a large ASCII art collection called "The ASCII Universe". As I was paging through some of the files, this one caught my eye. [preformatted] gopher//mozz.us:7070/mirrors/retrojunkie/

Scarecrow's ASCII Art Gallery — Bob Allison (aka "scarecrow") was a newgroup moderator and notable ASCII art collector in the early 90's. I was scrolling through one of his archive files, and I jotted down some notes on the pieces that I found particularly interesting....

Bluey — Some fan art for Bluey. As a parent, this is my favorite show on TV right now. It has the same kind of magic as early simpsons, which is hard to describe, but where the last 10 seconds can hit you in the gut with a wholesome message. [preformatted] Bonus: Here's my initial version, which was smaller scale and came out kind of derpy. It has its own derpy charm. [preformatted]
