1. The technology sucks. Activity Pub is half baked, and was rolled out prematurely to create Mastadon.
2. Mastadon is a Twitter clone and Lemmy is a Reddit clone. I hate the originals. Why would the clones be better?
3. Mastadon doesn't work *at all* without Javascript. Lemmy barely works without it. *Puke!*
4. The people there are not nicer than Twitter or Reddit. Their mobs just have different political motivations. Never forget how Wil Wheaton fled Mastadon after getting bullied.
5. No account freedom. You are stuck on your instance, and if they boot you, you have to start over. In this limited respect Nostr is superior.
6. AIDS doesn't cure cancer.

ActivityPub is unreliable, inefficient, insufficient (no concept of account migration?) and it's a very 'open' spec (anyone can come up with their own Activity or Object type, plus the wording is ambiguous). But I believe an ActivityPub-compatible social network can be a good thing if it allows people to discuss topics they care about without addiction, without ads/tracking and without a web frontend that requires a powerful computer. IMO the tech itself is not the real problem, but the 'product' built on top of it, which is designed to be addictive, fancy and competitive.

I feel similarly, especially about 2-4. I am biased, I think, in that I somewhat dislike those ways of Interneting in the first place. Sprinkling some "federation" on something doesn't make it better neccessarily, and not all "centralized" fora or social sites are bad. Bubble is a good example, and so is tildes.net. Most of my online socializing happens on the numerous pubnix servers I frequent, which would fall into the "centralized" category, but are the nicest places on the internet that I know of.
Is this supposed to be tounge-in-cheek ?

I dunno, I like Mastodon. In fact, I like a lot of things. Why do we have to be so negative about things all the time? I think it's a lot more interesting to find some way to actually enjoy life.
I'd much rather use fediverse for my kids daycare/school info than that bloody facebook thing everyone seems to assume everyone has an account on
I agree with @mieum, decentralizing something doesn't really solve real problems like lack of trust or disrepsect for marginalized groups. If you don't trust the server's operator or moderation doesn't work (content is offensive/junk/...), it doesn't matter if it's a federated service. And you can't expect ActivityPub, as a particular solution for federation, to solve these problems.

in a mundane sense, open protocols are good like rss is good. Companies and governments can use them to publish data and we can read it in an open way. As a notification system and potentially a service desk, it does the job.
