I see it is some excrable effluvium from freedesktop.org (something I try to stay as far away from as possible).

Thanks to the clue from @stack I was able to fix my issue in ~ 5 minutes. Now lagrange opens PDF files in xpdf (no gnome here ...)
[SOLVED] Where does Lagrange on linux find the PDF viewer? — I would like to change the viewer being invoked (currently pdfarranger) and am stumped on this.
