Tootik is a Fediverse server for the smol internet, written by dimkr. It federates with Mastodon, Akkoma, and all of those, but Tootik instances themselves can only be viewed over Gemini, Gopher, Finger, and Guppy.
My Tootik instance (closed registration)
And it fills such a perfect niche in my life that for once, I actually want to try and contribute to it. I’m still in the baby stages of figuring out Go, but for now I run an experimental build of my own that removes the post rate limit.
It would be nice for people running Tootik to be able to configure these without having to edit the config files and build the executable themselves.
This seems simple. How hard can it be? (Note to future me: Don’t laugh at me for asking this.)
Tootik can display about-mes from remote servers; it would be nice to be able to have them for local users, too. Especially since many users with locked accounts won’t accept follow requests from blank profiles.
I’m not complaining about the randomly-generated profile pictures. They’re cute, and it’s not like I see them on my end... But it does bug me that they get generated at such a small resolution and then upscaled to be blurry on remote servers. IDK what would fix this while having them still be smol in filesize. Maybe if they were SVGs? (I don’t know how to SVG.)
We’ve all seen the occasional bigot or spambot on Fedi. This isn’t a huge priority for me because of my relatively small follow list, how Tootik discourages doomscrolling in the first place, and because of the fact that I can just copy-paste the post URL in another instance I have an account on and report it from there if needed, but it would be nice.
Having them actually collapse on Tootik’s end isn’t a priority for me, but it would be nice to be able to *send* collapsed posts to Mastodon et al.
Perhaps as the link text for the image in question, assuming those links are actually displayed in the proper order. (Double-check this.)
Some people want private Fedi instances. IDK if any of those people would ever use Tootik, but I wonder how hard this would be to implement. Probably not very?
Rate limiting still affects editing posts.
