I will have very little personal information here, you know, internet and all. But what follows is a bit of info.
After close to 50 years of Computer Work (IT), I retired in early 2023. Now I am just hacking and learning new tech.
My first professional programming job was while I was in college, it was FORTRAN IV for HEW (a Government Department) on punch-cards, I loved that work . In college I majored in business because there were no majors for the business side of computers at the time. All computer courses were considered part of the Math Department, so I would have had to majored in Math as opposed to Business. At the time, I thought knowing the Business side of the world would be better than theoretical math, looking back, seems I was right.
After graduation I had a very hard time finding an IT position, but I finally did at Wang Labs. Before that I worked odd Manufacturing Jobs for a year. The economy was bad when I graduated. So, when I went into IT, I took a pay cut, but I really wanted to work in IT. Little did I know that kind of work would become as important as it is now. When I started, we where paid poorly and was considered 'not real'. But within a few years, our outlook changed greatly.
So, for the young people here, if you like IT and looking for work, keep trying, eventually you will find a position. And I am sure you will see big, if not bigger changes, as I did over the years.
