New "Certificate and Key Validator" service to Kennedy — I added a "Certificate and Key Validator" service to Kennedy. This helps you figure out if a certificate/key change on a capsule is from a innocent change by the capsule owner, or a possible MITM attempt. Read me here: [gemini link] If I ever build a Gemin client, I would probably build something like this into it. (with a perference to disable). As in, if you access a capsule and it's cert/key is different, my client would check with...

So I'm at my gran's right now and the main fuse has blown. While we wait for Northern Powergrid to arrive, my dad's taken the liberty of changing the socket behind the sofa, since the old one is broken. Anyway, it turns out that none of her sockets are earthed, so it's a miracle nobody's been electrocuted in the 60+ years the family's been living here.

Linux Foundation now spends only 2% of their revenue on Linux. The Linux Foundation has released their 2023 Annual Report... and it is an absolute doozy. The first big headline? As of 2023, The Linux Foundation now spends just 2% -- that's two percent -- of their revenue on their namesake: The Linux Kernel. "Ask yourself this: If there is a foundation named after a specific thing... what percentage of that foundation's revenue would you expect to be spent on said thing? Let's say... "Save...

Busting out the good 'ole .5mm Pentel — [https link] 3x5-2023-12-27-01 It was fun creating a 3x5 card post. Handwriting and degrees of rudimentary drawing felt truer to the moment than pure text. Also, there seemed to be more value to it for having felt the expenditure of energy over time. Too bad Gemini isn't into images. [gopher link] Programming-related rants, some hilarious, some depressing Yes, gum and shoelace scraps and metal clothing hangers bent just right.... While ego of course...

Has anyone else read works by Vydūnas. Briefly told his main interest is in realising divinity in ourself, in his own words doing so brings out true spiritual freedom. If you hadn't read any of his articles and are intested, I could translate one of his articles from Lithuanian to English and post on Gemini.

@highlight — I can't believe it! As if Facebook wasn't invasive enough, they invent the feature @highlight and reactivate it annually for you! I just saw family and friends complaining about receiving notifications for the use of that tag 🙄 I searched a way to avoid this feature (also invited them to leave Facebook): 1. Click on “Settings & Privacy,” followed by “Settings.” 2. Scroll down the page, and click on “Notifications.” 3. Click on “Tags” to choose which notifications you receive. 4....

Terrestrial version of Pino? — The Hundred Rabbits crew—and others, to be sure—achieve considerable independence by living on a boat. I've been wondering if there are other ways to get a taste of this kind freedom from everyday material constraints (i.e., having to make rent). Last week I saw an article about a couple living in a customized van. At 72 square feet, I think this Ram ProMaster has a smaller volume than the Hundred Rabbits boat. Doesn't sound nearly as romantic. Similar...

thegonz.net downtime — thegonz.net, including gemini.thegonz.net and cdg.thegonz.net, is down, I think due to a power cut, and will sadly most likely remain so until the new year. Sorry about that.

Editing Long Text — Recently after uploading a long multi-paragraph post with the 'Add long text' feature, I was unable to edit it. Unless I did something wrong, this severely limits the usefulness of Titan uploading. I don't think it would be that hard to break up the text into paragraphs, and assuming each paragraph is of a reasonable size, allow normal editing functionality. This can be done during initial ingestion or when the user pulls it for editing, depending on how BBS stores data......

No doubt about the flout spouts — [gemini link] Electric cars: reprise and I hate self-promoting psychopaths spouting bullshit [preformatted] [gemini link] Contents of a drawer Glorious! I've been enjoying retrieving boxes from storage, whose contents were somewhat thrown together in the heat of the needing-to-move moment. It's fun/interesting to encounter varieties of things amongst unlikely boxfellows. [gemini link] Happy thoughts about holiday, worries about 2024 Worries are plenty...

Issue with Flatline messages page. I've tried subscribed to the gemfeed but it doesn't seem to work on lagrange. Could it be for the envelope utf8 icon just before the date?

KaiOS — What are the opinions here on KaiOS? I see a bunch of feature phones with it, but I'm unsure if I should trust it.

Home grid configuration — I reached a small dead end while I was thinking about organizing a home grid. A typical grid is represented with a terminal, file server, auth, and CPU. All data is stored on a file server, authorization via auth, etc. For now I have only one laptop with Plan 9 (9front). But can I integrate this laptop into the "classic" grid? Or do you have other grid configurations? For example, a user on my laptop who authenticates locally also authenticates on devices in other home...

Electric cars: reprise — [gemini link] Thank you for this and other responses. No cars is better than any cars of any kind -- that is true; public transit, density and sensible city planning are much better. In the meantime, electric cars do offer a reasonable-seeming solution for short suburban commutes with lots of time to recharge, in places where infrastructure is available. But I still think we are fooling ourselves about pollution (unless we are in Norway or some place that does not use...

s/Anonymous a new subspace for pgp encrypted messages (idea) — Hi, this is a simple proposal to add to this BBS a new subspace dedicated to share PGP encrypted messages. The current pgp section is dedicated to share public keys and if people start to upload message there its going to quickly make it unreadable. This subsection would make it akin to a drop box allowing users to share their pgp key in s/PGP and message each other in s/Anonymous what do you think about the idea? (of course I...

Toilets: Good, Bad, and Exploding — Americans are obsessed with bathrooms, and my house has four. To be fair, it has (conservatively) 10 bedrooms, so it's not really excessive. I think it was a whorehouse in the early 1900's. One of the toilets, my favorite, had a jet-engine flusher. Sequestered on the top floor and used mainly by me, it was incredibly powerful: nothing was ever unflushed as a blast of water blew through it with tremendous force. It was truly awesome, and I became a butt...

I've long been less than thrilled about what a holiday does to online treats — It's so par for this world's course that an alleged celebration of a person could have so little to do with what that person espoused. And it's under par sadly hilarious when said person favored the non-attachment to personhood. Oh, for the love of murmur and truth conflated! [gemini link] A bad definition of identity Identity is a conceptual personhood/individuality model believed to be no mere model but,...

Apparently my tinkering on the server today caused agate to generate a new security certificate for jdcard.com. Since I hadn't backed up the old certificate I have no way to restore it.

Printed books — We should print our private chats and valuable articles on paper. This is the only thing that lasts. I can name a few examples of people really understand this.

I am a noob, I do not know what a backlink is. Kennedy search engine has an option "backlink to capsule", is this a button I need for adding my own capsule to the search engine? Why is it called so strange then?

Yule-Time Well-Wishings — I feel like the modern secular version of Christmas — aka Santa and gifts — is so far-removed from its original meaning that a different word should be used for it altogether. Fortunately for me, here in Finland we continue to call it "Joulu", as in the old pre-Christian feast called Yule. Have a fun Yule celebration, Geminauts! [preformatted]
