A couple of folk albums from Santa Cruz — Yesterday I visited Santa Cruz, CA on the last leg of our holiday's vacation. We stopped by a childhood favorite Streetlight Records. I was pleased to find the old place had a Local Artists section. Below are excerpts from a pair of albums I left with, and links the artists' web pages. Chicken Mama - In the Advocate (2017) This album was recorded live in its entirety in the goose pen of the Advocate Tree in the Forest of Nisene Marks, Aptos, California,...

— The artwork

New artwork entry in Stafetten 2 — There is now a new visual response in the Stafetten 2 project. I'll link it directly here but also the project page if you want to (re)discover more of it. So Natalia has painted a very detailed picture with lots of symbols in it, which is always fun to interpret. It feels like we are continuing on the more light theme. which is very nice.

Spector's Wall of Sound is Awful, imo — Was reading about the "Wall of Sound" recording technique by Phil Spector, as well as listening to some of the samples. I don't understand why people in the 60s thought this technique sounded good. It's pretty much the one main thing I hate about older music, lol. In fact, I associate a lot of older music with this sound, and that's why I don't listen to a lot of older music. It makes everything sound distant and muffled and unclear.

I'm partial to the Singer/Songwriter category these days. I recently discovered Peter Mulvey (Knuckleball Suite). I love his lyrics and his voice.

Was just thinking about what my top 10 albums I've listened to are, so I decided to compile a list! I consider all of these albums to have no-skips for me personally. They are also balanced between great lyricism, musicality, and production. 1. You Want It Darker - Leonard Cohen 2. The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 3. Midnights - Taylor Swift 4. Did You Know There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd - Lana Del Rey 5. When Facing the Things We Turn Away From - Luke Hemmings 6. Full Moon -...

Anyone into Todd Rundgren? He is often known for his early pop/songwriter albums... but man does he have some out there experimental stuff. Plus he tended to record all the instruments himself on many of his albums (pre-digital recording). Super innovative cool stuff. The album "A Wizard, a True Star" is a good start on the experimental stuff. Though I am also partial to "Hermit of Mink Hollow", which is much more traditional in some ways, but still strange and fun (with a few lower points).

Since I've been rewatching Ghost in the Shell SAC 2045, it's time to get a bit cyberpunk. Here's "Fly with me" by Millennium Parade.

Kovok - pre-production guitar tracking — My band Kovok are recording our first 4-track EP during the following weeks. So this week I have started with guitar tracking, with 2 / 4 songs now recorded. I have used free software for the whole process: JACK, Ardour, Guitarix and GNU/Linux. You can watch this video of one of our songs (guitar only), showing the process:

Maybe some synth pop will get things flowing. Here's one from one of my favorite current bands - Ultraflex.

SonicPi compositions over Gemini? — Any SonicPi users on here? Seems to me that Gemini is the perfect place to share text based compositions... I myself am very bad at it, so I won't inflict my noob experiments on you guys, but I'm sure the broader community would love to see some of your compositions... And maybe some Geminauts will be hearing about SonicPi for the first time on here... I think it deserves its own subspace.

any swifties in gemspace? — last week I watched the eras tour movie in the theater. It was great. The theatrics she and her team put into the performance were fantastic. The set list was full of great choices too (so glad Tolerate It is getting played live, pop music needs more 5/4). Anyone else seen it? anyone lucky enough to actually catch her live?

i've been enjoying "poison" by kap bambino a lot recently. overall, they're one of my favorite bands! they're kinda niche and they do electropunk which is a niche genre itself (the biggest name is perhaps MSI, a more modern direction is hyperpop, e.g. 100gecs). anywhoo, just sharing this song here, hope you'll like it! [https link] --- i love kap bambino so much that their logo's on my webpage :) i'm also waiting for a cd of a kap bambino album to arrive soon! ~ p.s. hope you're having a...

Peşrev music — I've been interested in Middle Eastern music. Recently I've learnt about peşrevs. I would like to know if any of you would like to share your personal favourite picks. If you don't know much about Middle Eastern Middle Eastern musical tradition, I or someone else may be able to help answer the questions. I know the Western world is distant from Middle East, I think it wouldn't hurt if we were to talk more broadly about this topic. Most of my...

Announcing Stafetten 2 — It is always nice to have some motivation to be creative, so here it is, in the open, (almost) from the start, the new Stafetten 2 art/music project. Like last time I am collaborating with my friend Natalia who will be making the visual responses, I will in turn respond with music. For now this project will be Gemini exclusive :) Hope you like it!

Is there any good music making software that's fully accessible only using a keyboard? (The typing kind, I mean.) I can't use a mouse, and I can emulate one in a pinch, sure, but I'm curious if there's anything like what I'm describing out there. Preferably with Linux support, but I'll take what I can get. I’ve never learned proper music theory, I just want to noodle around and see if I can make cool sounds :)

Midinous — A node-based, non-linear MIDI sequencer. Recently I stumbled across this very interesting piece of software. Was curious if anyone here knows about it and if you don't, I recommend checking it out. I've been having some fun, but didn't really got into the weeds of it yet. The node-based thing can be a bit of a mind-fuck if you're not used to anything like it, but it makes my programmer brain parts tingle. I wouldn't do it justice rambling about it with my very limited knowledge so...
