I read the article, but I still have no clue as to what this project is... Islands, integration, Windows compatibility, what? What the heck is it? It's like marketing-speak but what is the product?

Says the person that doesn't know there isn't anything better to do than read hot-of-the-press BBS posts! ;-)

Hey everyone! Micropelago is a project I've been working hard on in my spare time. I'm happy to answer any questions about it, or just receive general feedback.
@stack you're right, this post is a poor introduction to the project, it was targeted more at anyone who's already been keeping an eye on it. Probably the best starting point currently would be the Isle git repo:
Admittedly even that isn't the best either, as it focuses on the technical aspects quite a bit. Developing a proper landing page is one of my goals for the year.

mediocregopher, look, all this stuff has already been made, it just has different names. BitTorrent for filesharing, for example. ActivityPub for forums and posting. IPFS - cloud file storage that already work. You need to perfect those technologies.

@nikhotmsk Ifully recognize that a lot of what I'm looking for already exists in other projects, which is why the Isle project is really just a frontend on top of those projects, gluing them together into a cohesive whole.
— garage for the storage layer
Dnsmasq for DNS.
Individually these projects aren't very approachable for an average person, but hopefully with a bit of effort the rough edges can be worn down.
