I have struggled with my weight over the last five years. In 2018 and 2019 I was considered severely obese based on my BMI. I feel ashamed that I ever allowed myself to reach that point and I am working hard to bring my weight down again.
I was never overweight while growing up, even though my diet was largely an unhealthy one. The number of calories I ingested from Chicken McNuggets and chocolate milkshakes was always balanced out by the number of calories I burned by going on hiking trips, bicycling around town with my friends, swimming at the local YMCA, or simply growing taller. Even at university, I spent enough energy walking around campus to avoid gaining extra weight.
I started to become significantly heavier in 2016. At the time I frequently played arcade dance games with my college friends, and I justified my habits of eating fried mozzarella sticks and Hershey's chocolate bars by telling myself that dance games were burning them off. I deliberately didn't keep track of my weight because I told myself there was no need. I started my current job in 2017, a desk job in a corporate office, and despite a significant reduction in my daily physical activity I continued to overeat. I even ate at Dunkin' Donuts every day for a period of time in late 2017.
I have lost 30 pounds from my all-time heaviest weight in mid-2018, but based on my BMI, I am still technically considered obese. I will try to document some of my progress on this phlog as I work to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
