For me, video games are merely devices to keep my hands busy. I enjoy platforming games, shoot 'em ups, music games, and other genres that allow me to simply turn my brain off and focus on reflexes and muscle memory. I usually have no interest in plot, lore, resource management systems, strategizing, or min-max problems. Needless to say, role-playing games, especially MMORPGs, are about as far removed from my interests as one can imagine.
My wife, on the other hand, is an avid gamer and a big RPG fan. She had played Final Fantasy XIV for years, but when we met, she was on a hiatus. When she met many of my friends who also played FF XIV, she reactivated her subscription, and now she plays frequently.
On her suggestion, I created an account in the summer of 2018 and chose to play as a monk. The monk's fighting system is about as close to real-time as possible within the mechanics of the game, and effective fighting as a monk involves a good amount of muscle memory. I've had a lot of fun learning how to chain attack patterns and time them skillfully.
I still prefer many other games over FF XIV, but my first step into MMORPGs could have been a lot worse.
