Daylight Savings Time

2021-03-17

---

I live in the American Midwest, and this past Sunday (2021-03-14) we moved our clocks forward one hour for daylight savings time.

I am probably in the minority, but I don't really have a problem with DST. I tend to wake up late and go to bed late, and in the summer I like having extra sunlight at the end of the day, even if it means sacrificing some sunlight at the beginning of the day. I am a man of habit, and I'm now used to changing the clocks each spring and autumn.

Every year around this time, there is some discussion about having America stick to one clock throughout the year. Many people seem to prefer DST to be the common time for the US. I'm not sure I would like that arrangement--sunrise would not occur until after 9 AM in winter months, and the sun would not be directly overhead at noon, which is the common marker for time zones elsewhere in the world. I would prefer to stick with standard time, though I would miss the extra hour of sunlight at the end of the day.

Daylight savings time actually serves a secondary purpose for me. I own several watches and clocks that do not synchronize the time over the radio or the Internet. Because I am required to change these timepieces twice a year for DST, I have an automatic reminder to check them and ensure they show the correct time and date.

Every year people say to me "Did you hear they're going to get rid of daylight savings time soon?" I've heard it enough that I'll believe it when I see it. In the meantime, I frankly won't be campaigning that hard to abolish it.
