Retro Gaming

2021-06-29

---

I enjoy playing video games, but almost all the games I like are older games, from the mid-2000s and before. Pretty much all of my favorite console games can be emulated these days, but it can be hard to get old computer games designed for Windows 95 or 98 to run correctly.

My old ThinkPad T410 is now configured to do just that. I put an old copy of Windows XP onto it and installed programs from old installers I've saved, including Flash, Java 7 and RetroArch. The goal is to create a retro PC that will run all my old games as close to natively as possible.

Part of the retro experience is an old monitor, but I no longer own any CRT computer monitors. Fortunately we still have a few CRT televisions, so I bought a VGA to RCA converter and use the TV as a retro monitor. The experience is actually quite satisfying.

To my great surprise, Windows XP is still very usable as a daily driver OS in 2021. I may further document the setup later.
