A fifteen-minute drive from my office building takes me to a local airfield. The facility features a large parking lot that runs along the perimeter fence. As one could guess, I take many lunch breaks there.
At first I would simply sit in my car with the windows open, listening to the hum of propellers and the whine of low-bypass ratio jet engines. One day a larger aircraft departed from the field, and I went up to the fence to see it on the runway. Ever since that day, I will walk through the parking lot along the fence, watching planes take off and land.
I've found that going on this simple walk in the middle of the day tremendously benefits my mental and emotional state. I stay indoors during work hours, and because my wife is a homebody, we rarely go out in the evenings. Walking around the airfield parking lot gives me some much-needed exposure to the sun. Whether or not I can smell jet fuel, the breeze is laden with pleasant aromas. I hear birds in the air; I see bugs in the grass. Flowers sometimes dot the fields, and leave sometimes roll by in the wind. And for a moment, I have not a care in the world.
Not to mention, I get to see some planes up close. That's what I'm really there for.
