My company employs over a hundred non-managerial IT workers. Their corporate headquarters hosted over eighty of them before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, including myself. All of us were required to work from home beginning in March 2020. Now, a year and a half later, I'm the only one out of those 80+ employees who has willing returned to on-site work.
During my period of remote work, I found that my productivity was severely impacted by being home, Further, my job performance degraded over time, rather than improving. I was unable to go to a collaborative workspace for many moths, as they had been shuttered due to quarantine mandates. The result was that my superiors were dissatisfied with my results, and I was deeply unhappy.
I've had conversations with several of my coworkers, and none of them feel the same way. Every one of them is happier working from home now, even if he or she initially was not. Of course none of them join me in the office, so while I've reclaimed a dedicated work space outside the house, I still spend my days in solitude. The result is that I feel quite socially isolated and, frankly, rather lonely.
