While I do work in IT, I don't consider myself to be a particularly skilled script writer. I'm not well-versed in tools such a awk, and I don't always know how to save computation time or resources. Still, I write a number of scripts for personal use, and I believe that eating my own dog food is one of the best motivators to find improvements in my own work.
One such script is for managing an offline microblog-style micro journal. It creates a Markdown-formatted timeline file, formats posts, adds attachments, creates reply links, and has many other features. This is the same script I mentioned in my first small Web log entry; I use it every day to record thoughts and rants, and I want it to function as well as possible.
For a long time I had never intended to share the script with anyone else. I didn't feel greedy or entitled; I simply lacked confidence in my abilities as a script writer, and I worried that others would consider it a mangled mess not even worth improving. I have to accept, however, that if I'm ever going to improve my programming skills, I need more talented people to look at my work and tell me where I can make improvements.
The script is now available for download in the "Files" section of my capsule. I hope other people might find it useful, but I hope even more that I can clean up some of the uglier parts of the code as other people look at it and offer suggestions.
