How to

Create your own Gemini Capsule/server

Step 1

Create your own server.

Options: raspberry pie with port forwarding, VPS, root server

If you don't have you own root sever (which I assume you don't as you would not be reading this tutorial), you can spin up a little VPS (Virtual Private Server). Look for the smallest shared CPU VPS. Will be around $5 per month or equivalent.

Once you have signed up to your chosen provider, you will need to to start your server and chose you operating system (OS) which will be Linux.

Step 2

Step 3

We now need to get a domain. There is a small cost per year to get this. There are many sites that sell domain names, some are free for a time, Most likely wherever you got you VPS from will sell you a domain name. Have a look around and find the best price for you. Pro tip: Just try and stay away from providers ending in daddy.

Once you have your domain log into your account and create an A record with the IP address from your VPS. Wait for the DNS to resolve and that's it.

Step 4

Create content. There are many ways to upload your content to you Gemini capsule. I found scp to work best for me. You can create cron jobs if you like. Some use Git and Github.

Experiment and find your own ways.

But most of all have fun with it and learn.
