dressupgeekout's gemlog: W May 25, 2022

A few days ago, I decided to tackle my fear of hosting my own personal email server head-on. And, uh, yeah. It *is* as hard as I had feared.

Doing it for local-only email -- or I guess just a LAN -- it works fine. Postfix on NetBSD has very sensible defaults there. And *receiving* emails from the internet works automatically.

But if I want to *send* email from my server to the internet, then it becomes insanely more difficult to handle. THIS is what I was afraid of.

I've been at this for a while, and the tutorials I've found suck and are still intimidating. I don't even have the strength to explain what I know right now. I'll do that later. But I *can* say right now that I have learned a LOT about how email actually works -- SMTP, IMAP, POP, the whole ball of wax. And what doesn't kill me only makes me stronger. So I guess I am a better computer user/sysadmin/etc. after all of this. Yay?

I still don't have the results I was looking for, though. Maybe someday.
