Paddy Leonard, 27 Dec
In October Derry’s Guildhall Square was packed with the wonderful
sounds of hundreds of singers singing ‘Dreams’ by the Cranberries, from
the phenomenal hit TV series, ‘Derry Girls’!
The momentous occasion was part of the City of Derry International
Choir Festival's 10th anniversary celebrations involving singers from
all over the world!
The chorus of local post-primary students included students from Lumen
Christi College, Foyle College, St Cecilia's College, St Columb's
College, St Mary's College, Thornhill College, Coláiste Chineál Eoghain
and Scoil Mhuire Buncrana.
Relive this wonderful celebration of Derry that marked the incredible
success of hit Channel 4 TV show DerryGirls and acknowledged Derry
being honoured with the very prestigious designation of UN City of
Peace.
The United Nations International City of Peace programme acknowledges
cities worldwide that have demonstrated outstanding efforts in
fostering peace, tolerance and co-operation among their diverse
communities.
Organisers say Derry’s transformation into a symbol of peace is a
testament to the city’s resilience and dedication to moving on from the
past.
The International City of Peace designation serves as a global
recognition of ongoing efforts in bridging divides, fostering dialogue
and nurturing a culture of understanding among its citizens.
Since its inception the festival has welcomed more than 10,000 singers
to Derry from around the world, performing all styles of music, all
with the common thread of enjoying singing together and sharing that
joy with others.
