XMPP

I spent some time caring for my XMPP server. Finally set up HTTP File Upload so I can send images. Just a self-signed cert right now, though, so many clients still refuse to work. I'll fix that.

Also set up a STUN thing so XMPP calls can get through even though both clients are behind NAT. Works OK if you'e not behind CGNAT or assymetrical NAT or something terrible like that. No TURN yet and I don't know if I'll even get to that.

Now running Dino as the desktop client. Seems to work fine but with a few annoying quirks:

Of course, this means I can't just mosh in to a shell box and get my XMPP anymore. Still thinking about how to handle that. Did some experiments with using the same JID on Conversations on the phone and Dino on a desktop. Seems to work alright, actually, even with OMEMO. Maybe I can live with this. Use the phone when I'm at work and the desktop when I get back home.

Oxide Computer Company

The amazing Oxide Computer Company had this wonderful podcast called On the metal where they typically interviewed some really interesting people and discussed things on the hardware/software interface. Then they suddenly stopped publishing episodes. I kept hoping they would come back.

It turns out they started doing a Twitter Spaces thing instead. And I completely missed it! It's called Oxide and friends. They publish the show notes on Github:

https://github.com/oxidecomputer/twitter-spaces

The show itself is available not only on Twitter, but also on Youtube

Oxide's Youtube channel

and in several podcast places, for instance here:

Transistor FM

Status bar

Did some more experiments with yambar. Got a pretty nice setup with River tags to the left, the title of the current window (view in Wayland speak) in the center and some status things like volume, battery charge and timestamp to the right.

SIP

More experimenting with SIP. Tired of NAT now and thinking about setting up a v6-only SIP network for myself and my friends.
