Art on the internet

There's just no way around UbuWeb. They have been around since 1996 as a collection of rare sound art, outsiders, dance, performance, video, conceptual art and a whole lot more. It's become such a huge resource that you don't go there to explore things, it's best to know what to search for.

Then there's the occasional gem at the webarchive. Some videos end up there after having been banned on the other video site, you know, the biggest one, presumably because they traumatise children with mashups of cartoons and memes with glitches and sudden extremely loud distorted sound. If anything these videos should qualify as outsider art. It's besides the point if they weren't intended as art.

But my favourite of them all is the remarkable catalogue of noemata.net, ever expanding, growing by who knows what means, I suspect partly by algorithmically generated material, partly manually created digital doodles, photos, short sound bits, lots of text, emails, and dialogues with a chatbot. The site has been around for years, probably since the late 90's. Is it art? Yes. Is it good art? Wrong question. It lives on the internet and isn't a copy or documentation, this is the real art project.

Then there's this non-fungible token thing that I'd rather not waste too many words on. Suffice to say that it's a waste of energy, to the point of being bad for the environment, and a silly scheme for making people invest in nothing at all. For a better review I'll send you to this one:

Also another source on the web:

The contemporary art market is already full of speculation and inflated prizes. Defenders of NFTs argue that it gives artists direct access to the art market, which is otherwise centralised with its gate-keepers and institutions, but I doubt the NFT markets are going to be any better even in that regard.

There are pages of quaint ascii art here on gemini, and there's this ANSI art collection:

Someone even made an ascii animation of Star Wars on the web some years ago. I'd like to know if there are any other interesting art projects here.
