	Internet Resources (Music/Guitar)

In this file:

	Introduction
	Usenet newsgroups and FAQ files.
Archives (Lyrics, Chords and Tablature, Docs, Software)
	WWW Sites
	Mailing Lists
Books and Magazines (in the 'real' world :-) )

Introduction
------------

The guitar community on the net is among the most organized in
free-cyberspace. This file tells you what is available for
guitar players on the Internet. The resources break down into
two main groupings - all the things you can do to get a (particular)
sound out of a guitar, and all the things to do with putting those
sounds in a particulat order. In other words, CONSTRUCTION (which
includes everything from actual construction of guitars, strings,
picks, pick-ups, amplification, peddles, down to nail-varnish) and
PLAYING (which comprisies basically lyrics, chords and tablature)

No one makes any money from these newsgroups, archive sites,
mailing-lists and web pages. You may pay for your Internet
access, but you don't pay anything for the material here.
Be sure to thank those who type up lyrics/chords/tabs, give
advice or run archives and web sites that you find useful.

Where can I get this FAQ?
-------------------------

The easiest place to get it is from alt.guitar,
rec.music.makers.guitar, rec.music.info and news.answers,
where it should be posted regularly.

By anonymous ftp to the Guitar Archive, directory
./other_stuff/docs/guitar_resources.txt

Posting
-------

How you post to the groups will depend on how you read news.
There will be some 'post' command on the software you are using.

Some of these groups have email servers for (reading and) posting.

E-mail posting to:

alt.guitar.tab
	alt-guitar-tab@cs.utexas.edu

rec.music.makers.guitar.tablature
	rec-music-makers-guitar-tablature@cs.utexas.edu

Make the 'Subject:' line of your mail as you want it to appear
in the newsgroup/s.

Posting Guidelines
------------------

Make sure that your post is relevant to the group.

Observe usual Usenet etiquette, such as:
no gratuitous flaming, no spamming,
keeping your .sig to 4 lines or less.

NEVER post a request without first checking the
Lyrics Archive or Guitar Archive.

ALWAYS, always mail your completed transcriptions to the archives.
For lyrics, email to datta@cs.uwp.edu
For chords/tab, e-mail to guitar@nevada.edu
Send multiple songs individually, or use tar.

Preparing Chords
----------------

If you know how to play the chords for a song, don't wait to be
asked! type them up and post them to the groups and the archive.
The standard way of doing this is simply to put the chord names
on a separate line above the lyrics. For example:

	Em D/F# G
	Four seasons in one day

This can cause problems when people have different character widths
and tab-settings on their screens, but since most people use standard
ascii, this is usually not a problem.

The other way of doing it is to embed the chords in square brackets
in the lyrics. For example:

	[Em]Four seasons [D/F#]in one [G]day

Files formatted in this way can be read by various utilities to produce
output of the first type, which is considered easiest to read.

Preparing Tab
-------------

Tablature is tedious to do by hand in ascii, but can be done.

Again, various packages exist to assist you, such as
Tab-n-Fret, Tab-Master and Bucket-o-Tab which are available
at the Guitar Archive, in the directory ./other_stuff

Word 5 and later (Mac and PC) has 'vertical pasting', allowing
you to select and paste part of a line or lines, rather than
the whole thing. Simply hold down the 'option' key when selecting text.
Even better, you can use 'insert' mode, and simply write-over
a stave of blank tab lines.

If you don't know what tab is, take at look at this: it's the
beginning of a tab for 'Happy birthday'

                                                         D7
e|--------------------------|-----------------3-------|--2-- ...
B|------------------3-----3-|-5-------3---------------|--1-- ...
G|--------------------------|-------------------------|--2-- ...
D|--------------------------|-------------------------|--0-- ...
A|--------------------------|-------------------------|--0-- ...
E|--------------------------|-------------------------|----- ...
    1 . 2 . 3 . 1 . 2 . 3 . 1 ...
Ha - ppy Birth - day to You. ...

Tab represents the guitar strings (bass tab would have only
four such lines) and the fret positions. There are way of
annotating most of the technique used by guitarists, such as
hammering-on, sliding, raking, etc.

For further introduction, see the WHAT_IS_TAB and 'suggested tab
notation' files kept in the directory ./other_stuff at the
Guitar Archive.

Archives
--------

	How to access Archives
	The Lyrics Archive
	The Guitar Archive
	Other General Chord/Tab Archives
	Artist Archives
	Archived Guitar Documents
	Archived Software

How to access Archives
----------------------

All of the following archives are ftp archives. This means that
anyone with either ftp or http (a Web browser) can access them.
Those with ftp only will not be able to access the Web sites in
the next section.

The best ways to access the Archives are:
1. Using the WWW - Web browsers such as "Mosaic" and "lynx"

2. Programs such as 'Fetch' on the mac.

3. (Unix only) Use Bob Zawalski's 'autotab' utility (based on
'getit'). You can get autotab from the Guitar Archive, in the
directory ./other_stuff or by e-mail from bobz@crl.com

4. Manual ftp. This certainly used to be the most common way to ftp,
but it ties up access for long periods of time. For information on
how to use manual ftp, see Ryan Harding's 'Guide to the TAB Archives',
posted to the newsgroups alt.guitar.tab and
rec.music.makers.guitar.tablature twice a week.

Anyone with e-mail can use a service called 'ftpmail'.
Again, see Ryan's post for details.

The Lyrics Archive
------------------

The lyrics archive is at ftp.uwp.edu/pub/
and is mirrored at
ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/pub/rec/music/vocal/lyrics/uwp

Dave Datta (datta@cs.uwp.edu) is the maintainer.

You can submit lyrics to the lyrics server
by ftp (put the new lyrics into the /pub/incoming directory and
send details by e-mail to Dave)
	or
by e-mail to datta@cs.uwp.edu

If you use ftp, also mail Dave with the following information:
	the name of the file
 	the artist
 	the title of the song/album

The Guitar Archive
------------------

The Guitar Archive is a collection of chords and tabs for 6000+
songs. It is provided free to the Internet community thanks to
the University of Nevada and the archive's administrators, and
it can be accessed by the following methods at the following places.

Most of these sites 'compress' their Archive.
If using manual ftp, simply use one of the sites with 'On-the-fly'
decompression, and type 'get filename.crd' even though the file is
listed as filename.crd.Z or filename.crd.gz
Decompression utilities for Macs and PC's are kept at the Guitar
Archive in ./other_stuff

Mailing Lists
-------------

A mailing list is like a newsgroup except it gets mailed to you. There
are usually two addresses: an administrative address and a reflector
address. Mail sent to the reflector gets mailed out to all of the
people who are subscribed to the list. If you want to subscribe or
unsubscribe to the list, send it to the administrative address.

A List of Musical Mailing Lists (LoMML) is maintained by Myra Wong
<mkwong@ucsd.edu> and posted to rec.music.info.
If you wish to obtain a copy try one of the following methods:
- Use the "finger" command: "finger mkwong@sdcc13.ucsd.edu" or to save it as
  a file, use "finger mkwong@sdcc13.ucsd.edu > listinfo.txt"
- Get it by FTP or ftpmail at location ftp.uwp.edu:/pub/incoming/faq/lomml
- Get it from the World Wide Web (WWW) using a browser such as lynx or Mosaic
  from http://server.berkeley.edu/~ayukawa/lomml.html
- If none of these are possible, then request it by email to Myra Wong at
mkwong@sdcc13.ucsd.edu and be patient - Myra has to process requests
  manually.

There are only about 2 of these lists for guitar manufacture/
upkeep/playing. The majority are for artists - you might pick up
chords/tab there, or info on how a song is played.

Books recommended for a beginner?

jamesb@nevada.edu suggests: '"The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer.
It is published by Knopf. When I used to give lessons, I took
stuff straight out of the book.'

For an advanced player?

jamesb@nevada.edu suggests: '"The Jazz Language" by Dan Haerle.
Published by studio. This is a popular book, and should be easy
to find. Don't let the title scare you, it doesn't just teach
jazz, it teaches theory. A very good source.'
