Oh look, more hate from the web. The funny thing is that this negative press still brings new people.
How many times will this place get ridiculed? Don't care, I'm still staying.

I see a lot of comments on this HN page saying that Gemini lacks this and that... But honestly, I use the web only for watching a stream, searching/studying about programming, and maybe some news? I absorb a lot more content from Gemini now that from the web.
Someone mentioned Gemini not having a social media site. What about this capsule and Station? lol
@odintsoff yeah I think a lot of the comments are misinformed, and have older experiences of gemini... not more than a few of them spent more than a couple days here.
what I like about it here is that there's usually no shit storms and hate threads. one commenter near the bottom said something like it was like resting at a lake being on here. I like that analogy.
I guess if I just scrolled a bit farther I would've seen the post from skyjake about this.

Farewell! and thanks for Amfora, my favorite terminal client.

I feel like in the last few years I've moved beyond the point where everyone has to appreciate my thing and see that it's the best.
The online spaces that I visit are fine how they are, and everyone doesn't have to see why they're so great. If more people join and the service grows, is that really beneficial to me? I'm fine with things being small and enjoyable.
I wouldn't describe the comments as hate, they're pretty reasonable although many are a bit off the mark factually.
I would even say it's a pretty positive response to Gemini viewed from afar. It's unusual to get a fair hearing online no matter what protocol is used ;)
@morgan agreed, hate may be strong; I guess I'm just defensive of this place. I'm also open to the criticism and like you said, some is warranted, but a lot of us that stay here don't find these things deal breakers.
I do think we're starting to move past the gemini-only content and elitist brands though.
I certainly enjoy the varied content :) maybe it's more that a lot of the <discussion> is about Gemini. Which makes sense as it's the one thing we all have in common. Doesn't seem like a big problem.
It's not worth worrying about it! It's not like any of us are going to leave because some guy, even some guy who wrote a bunch of software decided to go elsewhere.
Generally, the criticism of gemini at the technical level has little to do with the content or the community; clearly it's good enough to exchange ideas or shout into the vacuum -- regardless of pointless security aspects or number of round-trips of packets...
In fact, negative press is good press, as we don't want mass acceptance and the associated noise and capitalist headstompage.
"Hate from the web" is somewhat of a skewed perception of this post, I'd say. I'm sure not a few people on Bubble are using amfora. makeworld has been around here for a while and contributed a lot. Stepping away is fine. Their choice probably won't affect you, and it is not targeted at Gemini as a hateful act. Obladi-oblada, life goes on.
@mieum yeah I mentioned that below - I was talking about the HN comments but they have some varied points that aren't that unfair. I wish them the best and use Amfora quite a bit myself.
HN techbros missing the point, nothing new
@gritty, ah i see. i don't frequent the orange site, so i guess i am out of the loop. sorry!
This place is super cool, but it does feel a bit like its stretching the protocol and text format to the absolute limit
@20k If you're talking about BBS, I politely disagree; I think it's a showcase of what's possible with only text. sure the protocol won't let it scale up for mass use but I'm sure it was never intended for that type of use. at that point it should split off into smaller BBSs.
I'm so old, I think blogs *are* social media
@20k forums are mostly text, nothing wrong here.
