Looks like some server issue, yes.

By the way, this is a nice tool for checking server online status:

Yes I have, and I filed a report on their helpdesk but no response so far. Last time this happened it took them a day or two to address it.

It seems like when they reboot their gemini server it starts gem.sdf.org but not the base sdf.org gemini host.

i didn't know they have gemini servers, i thought they only support gopher.

🍄 Ruby_Witch · Jul 27 at 11:45:

@norayr They have two gemini servers in fact! One for MetaARPA members and one for the peasants (that's the one I'm on). Having two servers is likely why there are these issues sometimes.

thank you fellow peasants! especially appreciate the Houston tool, skyjake.

would it be okay to share the links here? (:

@norayr

Free SDF user server (currently down)

gemini://sdf.org/

MetaARPA premium user server (currently up):

gemini://gem.sdf.org/

My first pubnix was SDF and my capsule was initially hosted through them, I actually sent them a dollar in the mail lol! Unfortunately there were many issues I had with SDF such as being forced to run mkgopher every time I wrote a log so the file permissions were set right, or the 27kb file cap they force which made hosting an image or even writing a particularly long log an issue. In the end I found tilde.team to be far more streamlined and user friendly. Never had downtime, dont have to deal with esoteric command processes, and the commands seem more modern.

If you still want a capsule on SDF however I have written up a decent guide to make one!

smokey, is that why the music I tried to post on my capsule won't play? I was able to upload it, but it never played more than 2 seconds.

I've been happy enough with learning gopher through them, but I'd really like to have a capsule that I can share my music. would tilde be a good alternative?

😎 Smokey · Jul 27 at 15:07:

@murdock yes that is absolutely the reason why. I had to learn it the hard way and got that number through experementation on my part. The wiki never mentions that 27kb cap anywhere. Yes tilde is a great alternative all the offerings for each pubnix are a little different so you will have to do your own research but I truly enjoy tilde.team and have had no issues with them so far. Ben is an awesome sysadmin.

The main reason that I love sdf is their consistent longevity. If I post something there, it's likely to stick around...forever.

Although the fact that their gemini server has gone down a couple of times is kind of in opposition to that idea, haha. But my files are still there on the server. :)

thank you so much for providing the links to sdf servers! i found many interesting capsules there!
