I experienced a wonderful evening performing with a high school friend at a local bar last night. Not a whole lot of patrons, although we started with a table of nine in a blanket-knitting class seated before us, who seemed to enjoy our vibe. After that there might have been 20 additional patrons coming and going.
We performed for about four hours: basically to the point of exhaustion for guys our age. We'd warmed up a bit before we arrived to set up, but there was no planning. We just discussed what to do next after completing a tune, or sometimes just came in with something immediately after another was to the end of soloing a tune.
We were heavy on Beatles and Moody Blues, those being what we mostly grew up on.
At some point I did "The Crystal Ship" by The Doors, which so struck a chord with some guy at the bar that he came up somewhat misty-eyed to drop a twenty spot in our tip container. Whoa.
Much fantastic conversation after we got back to the house, put the equipment away, had some dinner, and got busy with some bourbon. Earlier in the day I'd gotten out some nostalgic trinkets (initially typed 'trinklets'... possible now word?) and photos, some of the latter of which he'd taken and developed "back in the day" (high school), which for us was the late 1970s. Just fucking glorious were the memories such provoked, including lots of fun "What the fuck were we thinking?" regarding a varieties of choices both then, and along the way since.
We hit a greasy spoon for breakfast this morning, a first time visit for me given I'm still a newbie to this locale: fabulously my kind of place and clientele.
Then he departed. Later today I drive to where my wife and I used to live, where she's spending time with girlfriends.
FWIW, this installment was typed to repeated plays of Toni Braxton's "Another Sad Love Song", which I was unaware of until yesterday when I wound up changing to the AM radio band just to see what kinds of AM stations there be in this area. The DJ never said the title or artist, so I was in the car madly repeating a couple song phrases I'd heard in order to search engine them to hopeful hitfulness. Soon enough, boom, there it was in da results!
