Yes, a case of over-specification: unless the italian used on this
capsule is really specific to Italy, there is no need to over-tag. To
quote RFC 5646:
1. Use as precise a tag as possible, but no more specific than is
justified. Avoid using subtags that are not important for
distinguishing content in an application.
* For example, 'de' might suffice for tagging an email written
in German, while "de-CH-1996" is probably unnecessarily
precise for such a task.

That's actually a good point, and thanks for the RFC reference! I admitI've never read it, but happy to have guessed right :)
Anyway, I assume most people picked up it-IT without knowing about RFC5646 and as a translation of the (I think) more common en-US (and maybealso due to how the $LANG variable is usually set up on the unices).Maybe it's worth to drop a line or two in the best practice about this?
