The Lupa crawler now displays most-popular TLD (Top-Level Domains) inthe geminispace by number of registered domains and no longer bynumber of capsules<gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/stats.gmi>. This isbecause popular hosting service using subdomains (likeflounder.online) tweak the statistics too much if you count capsules.
[The definition of "registered domains" is taken from Mozilla's PublicSuffix List <https://publicsuffix.org/>, which is not authoritativebut is better than nothing.]
With this, we have currently:
I suspect that many people choose a TLD for their capsule just becauseit "looks cool" or because it is the cheapest at this time. But payattention, not all TLD have the same rules and when a dispute occurs, the choice of TLD can be very important. The EFF (Electronic FrontierFoundation) made a very good report about that "Which InternetRegistries Offer the Best Protection for Domain Owners?"<https://www.eff.org/wp/which-internet-registries-offer-best-protection-domain-owners>. Readit before choosing a name for your capsule!
You may think "OK, what's the problem if .me depends on montenegrinlaw and .com on US law, I do not host political content, p0rn or filesharing, so I risk nothing" but this is not true, any name can get youthe unwelcome attention of lawyers, for instance because they findyour name too close from their trademarks.
