Kildare resident ordered to pay €1,000 for having off-leash dogs that were ‘worrying’ cattle

Ciaran Mather, 13 Nov

A North Kildare man ordered to pay €1,000 over an incident which

resulted in his dogs distressing and 'worrying' cattle.

Joshua Lee, with an address listed as The Downings in Prosperous, was

convicted of the offence by Judge Desmond Zaidan at Naas District

Court.

Gardaí present in court on Thursday, November 9 last, told the judge

that the 31-year-old was out walking in Downings North, Prosperous,

with two of his dogs — one pit bull and one English bulldog — on May

31, 2021.

It was heard that both dogs were not leashed at the time.

The dogs spotted a number of cows and calves on a farmland, and

proceeded to run towards them.

This resulted in €1,000 worth of damages to the cattle, gardaí told the

court, as some of the cattle required veterinary attention.

In response to hearing the details of the case, Judge Zaidan remarked:

"Pit bulls can be dangerous dogs.

"I am an animal lover, but I know that even the most tame dog can go

mad when they see sheep or cattle... he is lucky that the farmer didn't

shoot his dogs," the judge added.

Defending solicitor Seamus Boyle told Judge Zaidan that his client has

no previous convictions, and that he intends to pay the farmer €1,000

over the damages incurred.

He also said that the man's dogs have no been off-leash since the

incident.

Judge Zaidan ultimately agreed to the man's offer of payment to the

farmer, and gave him until February 8, 2024 to pay the farmer the

€1,000.
