OK, usually I can read, but sometimes...
One part of my brain is in charge of looking at the letters, figuring out what the words are, and sending them to the bit that handles meaning. But sometimes the meaning part loses interest, and I start thinking about something else. Meanwhile, the words keep coming. I keep turning the letters into words. I don't lose track of where I got to. But the output from there is piped to /dev/null and suddenly I realise I've read a paragraph or two but nothing went it.
The only other time I can think of this happening is motorway driving. After a while I can be on auto-pilot. Everything continues as normal without danger but I'm thinking about something else. And after another while I realise that I have no idea how far I've travelled. I have to wait for a junction to find out where I am.
