Welcome to my little corner of the Geminispace. This is currently hosted on a $5/month Linode "Nanode". We'll see how much she can take. I'm guessing it won't be overwhelmed any time soon.

9-29-2021 - Musings on Spotify

Tonight I'm marveling at all the relational links with massive "rabbit holes" inside Spotify. For example, I used to be a big fan of an electronic band called "The Crystal Method" back in the 90s, and just for the heck of it, I went to their artist page and looked at their spotify playlists. I found a playlist of theirs called "The Trip Home" that's really interesting. I wonder if the band listens to this while "tripping home"? lol.

But honestly there's all kinds of relational opportunity inside spotify. You can search playlists by topic, browse the users who created the playlists, check out other playlists they have, check out who they follow, who follows them, etc. It's kind of amazing being able to surf the spoti-web of playlists and tracks. To a person of my age who used to have to buy and listen to CDs, it seems almost infinite.

I also got myself a developer account so I could tap into the Spotify API itself, although the graphical client is almost just as useful, to be honest. I plan to use the API to do more data-analytical things that are better scripted than clicked. Example:

https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/reference/#category-search

Needless to say, I've barely begun to tap the potential of this massive dataset of music. I'm learning more all the time, and there's lots of fun things to tinker with.

Why Gemini?

Trying to learn the Laravel web app framework has led me here out of sheer spite. Why does web have to be based on a hundred ever-changing, buzz-fangled dependencies? How much do we really need it anyway?
